Equipment Analysis

Early Acoustic Gas Leak Detection for High-Pressure Systems

The Dräger Polytron® 8900 UGLD is a premium, explosion-proof Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector designed to identify pressurized gas leaks instantaneously. Unlike conventional gas detectors that must wait for a gas cloud to physically reach a sensor, this advanced transmitter uses an airborne acoustic microphone to pick up the high-frequency ultrasound generated by escaping gas. This revolutionary method ensures sub-second response times, mitigating explosive or toxic hazards before gas concentrations can accumulate.

Advanced Acoustic Intelligence and Visual Diagnostics

The core of the Polytron® 8900 UGLD features a highly sensitive, durable ultrasonic sensor that targets frequencies between 25 kHz and 100 kHz, completely ignoring normal human hearing and lower-frequency industrial plant noise. The device features a matrix-backlit graphical display and a bright, multi-colored LED ring that instantly shows the ambient decibel level and alarm statuses. Thanks to its non-intrusive design, operators can check system status, configure parameters, and perform calibrations via a magnetic wand without opening the flameproof housing or declassifying the hazardous area.

Modular Architecture and Digital Connectivity

Built to excel in the most punishing outdoor and industrial climates, the transmitter housing is available in either copper-free aluminum or premium 316 L stainless steel, complete with an IP65/66/67 ingress protection rating to resist heavy rain, sandstorms, and washdowns. It converts acoustic readings into a standard 4 to 20 mA analog output with HART digital communication. For maximum standalone versatility, this model can be upgraded with fieldbus modules or an integrated relay module that includes two gas alarm relays and one fault relay to instantly actuate local emergency systems.

Industrial Applications and Use Cases

  • Offshore Oil & Gas Platforms: Rapid structural perimeter monitoring for high-pressure methane leaks under high-wind conditions.

  • Onshore Refineries and Compressor Stations: Instantaneous detection of escaping gas along complex pipe racks, flanges, and valves.

  • Gas Storage and Custody Transfer Stations: Real-time acoustic surveillance of pressurized storage vessels and piping networks.

  • Chemical and Petrochemical Processing: Overcoming traditional gas dilution challenges in highly ventilated or open-air processing bays.
